Amanda Time-line

 

1 – MAY 20 2000 A broad low pressure system is producing a large area of cloudiness and disorganized

                               showers several hundred miles south of Acapulco, Mexico

 

2 – MAY 22 1400 First Tropical Depression of the eastern North Pacific season forms well southwest of

                               Mexico

 

3 – MAY 23 0800 Depression strengthens to Tropical Storm Amanda about 620 miles, 1,000 km SSW of

                               Manzanillo, Mexico

 

4 – MAY 24 0800 Amanda intensifies rapidly and becomes the First Hurricane of the eastern Pacific

                               season

 

5 – MAY 24 1400 Amanda quickly strengthening into a Category 2 Hurricane and expected to be a

                               major hurricane soon

 

6 – MAY 24 2000 Amanda is now a Major Hurricane, Category 3; and still additional strengthening

                               expected

 

7 – MAY 25 0200 Amanda becomes a Category 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph, 220 km/h

                               with still a bit more strengthening expected before weakening the following day

 

8 – MAY 25 0800 Amanda rapidly strengthens to near Category 5 intensity and becomes the Strongest

                               Hurricane to form during the month of May. Her maximum sustained winds are 155

                               mph, 250 km/h while travelling north at only 2 mph, 4 km/h. Amanda is presently

                               located about 770 miles, 1240 km south of the southern tip of Baja California

 

9 – MAY 26 1400 Amanda finally weakens back to a Category 3 with winds diminishing from 135 to 120

                               mph in the past six hours

 

10 – MAY 26 2000 Amanda is now a Category 2 Hurricane and continues to rapidly weaken

 

11 – MAY 27 0200 Amanda unexpectedly restrengthens with winds at 125 mph, 205 km/h making it a

                                 strong Category 3 again

 

12 – MAY 27 1400 Amanda weakens again to Category 2 status. Hurricane force winds extend outward

                                 up to 35 miles, 55 km from the centre and tropical storm force winds extend

                                 outward up to 105 miles, 165 km

 

13 – MAY 27 2000 In the past few hours Amanda has gone from a Category 2 to a Tropical Storm with

                                 winds of 70 mph, 110 km/h

 

14 – MAY 29 0800 Amanda weakens to a Tropical Depression while located about 455 miles, 735 km

                                 south of the southern tip of Baja California

 

15 – MAY 29 1400 Amanda continues to weaken and degenerates into a Remnant Low
