Raymond on October 21 @ 0800 hrs

A Major Hurricane but fortunately staying out at sea

Raymond rapidly formed from a tropical wave on October 20 to a tropical storm and later into a hurricane all within a day of cyclogenesis.  Hurricane Raymond reached Major Hurricane status on October 21 while stalled 165 miles WSW of Acapulco, Mexico.  On October 22 Raymond weakens and by the 23rd he is a tropical storm and finally moves away from land.  Four days later Raymond becomes a hurricane for a second time and peaks out as a Category 2.

Raymond became the only hurricane to reach a Major Category status during the 2013 tropical cyclone season and also became the only major hurricane to form on either side of the North American continent in either the eastern North Pacific or North Atlantic basins.

On October 21 Raymond was a hurricane sitting off the west coast of Mexico and threatening the area with it's heavy winds and rain.  This region was already hit by Hurricane Manuel the previous month and many people were still recovering from the damage that was caused.  Within a two day period 7.6 inches of rain fell near Acapulco and minor flooding occurred due to the outer rainbands.  Fortunately no deaths were reported but 585 people were rendered homeless as a result of the damage to property.

Raymond - the only Major Hurricane in 2013

The seventeenth named storm and the eighth hurricane of the eastern Pacific cyclone season formed on October 20, 2013 and dissipated on October 30, 2013.  Raymond threatened the southwestern coast of Mexico near Acapulco but never made landfall.  It reached its peak intensity with winds at 125 mph making it a Category 3 Hurricane.  Its proximity to land promted officials to evacuate residents from 81 municipalities.
